Types of shielding |
Beta emissions: 14C, 32P, 33P, 35S
Products for safer handling of β-emissions are constructed from heavy gauge, 10-mm optical-quality acrylic.
This material has a very low “Z-number”, reducing the energy of the “bremsstrahlung” produced and effectively absorbing all β-emissions, including those from phosphorus-32. | Gamma emissions: 125I
Attenuation of γ-emissions requires a high “Z-number” shielding (e.g. lead).
All GE Healthcare iodine-125 shielding provides both transparency and appropriate shielding by using a 12-mm lead acrylic co-polymer. This material has all the normal chemical and physical properties, including transparency, of conventional acrylic, but also provides a lead equivalence value of 0.5 mm to protect against all iodine-125 emissions. |
